How time flies

At the beginning of the year I promised myself I would make time each week to do a blog post - I enjoy writing my blog and I enjoy reading others.  So why has it been four weeks since my last post? Who knows, I had posts planned but they didn't happen.  So, a few things to catch up.

1.  Alice and I decided to take a trip out to Down House, which is only about 25 minutes away from us.  I can't believe we haven't been there before.  Since Charles Darwin's death it has been a home to others, including a girls school, but English Heritage has worked hard to get it back to how it was in Darwin's time.  I loved his study, a glimpse of which you can get here as no photos allowed.

Love the old glass house too, filled with carnivorous plants and other exotic plant species.

In the laboratory there's a glass beehive where you can see the bees going about their daily business. It was fascinating - lots of waggle dancing (the bees, not us!).

The queen had a pink disc on her back to help identify her - I wouldn't be able to pick her out without it, she looks very much the same as the others, just slightly more elongated.

2. The crochet WIP pile is getting silly.  I keep seeing things I want to try - either things to make or yarn to try out, the result being a huge WIP pile and a shed load of yarn.  Note to self - stop it and finish something.

3. I won a giveaway!  I was chuffed to bits to be the recipient of one of Just Pootling Kate's giveaways to celebrate her 2 years of blogging and all these lovely things have been put to good use.  Thank you Kate.

4. Thank you for your birthday wishes in the last post.  June and July are full of birthdays for us - five of us in my immediate family and several friends, it's hard to keep up with them all.  My lovely Flora will be coming up for her first birthday next month.  How time flies ...

Hope all is well out there ...

  6. Down House is somewhere I've always wanted to see, and it certainly sounds as interesting a place to visit as I imagined it to be.

Do you think blogs have had their day? Fewer and fewer people seem to have time for them, I know that's my experience this summer, both as a writer of one and a blog reader. That said I couldn't contemplate not blogging, it is as much a part of my life as reading now.

  7. Glad it all got to you safe and sound Jane. Kate xx

  8. Darwin's house looks beautiful and so interesting, Jane. It is now on my to-visit list if ever I am near enough! What a lovely giveaway prize you won from Kate's blog.....such pretty things. Your crochet always looks beautiful!
    Happy weekend.

  10. Your blg popped up on my bloglovin feed as a 'you might like' and bloglovin was right! Have really enjoyed reading through some of your posts, and will be back. I see lots of other bloggers I follow in your comments too, and on your blog feed, don't know why I haven't found your blog before! X
